Toxic coworkers: how to protect yourself and maintain your sanity in a poisonous work environment

If you’re stuck in a job with a poisonous work environment, it can be challenging to maintain your sanity and well-being. However, there are strategies you can use to protect yourself and potentially improve the situation.

    1. Set boundaries

    One of the most effective ways to protect yourself from toxic coworkers is to set clear boundaries. This means communicating your limits and expectations to your coworkers, and not allowing them to cross them. For example, if a coworker consistently interrupts you in meetings, you can politely but firmly let them know that you prefer to finish your thoughts before moving on to theirs. In the movie “The Devil Wears Prada,” the main character, Andy, sets boundaries with her demanding boss by letting her know that she has a life outside of work and won’t be available at all hours of the day.

    7. Stand up for yourself

    While it’s important to avoid engaging in petty arguments or gossip with toxic coworkers, there are times when it’s necessary to stand up for yourself and assert your boundaries. This could involve directly confronting the toxic coworker or seeking support from a manager or HR representative. In the movie “9 to 5,” the characters played by Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton take a stand against their sexist and abusive boss by confronting him and coming up with a plan to teach him a lesson.

    8. Look for opportunities to improve the work environment

    While it may not be possible to change a toxic coworker, there are often ways to improve the overall work environment.
